2021 HVCA Results:

Team A -  12th out of 54 Teams:        6 Fish for 19 Points

Team B -  23rd out of 54 Teams:        6 Fish for 7 Points

Both teams fished hard in tough conditions.  Hurricane Larry passed offshore creating swells up to 8 foot high.  Day one was dominated by less than ideal beach conditions with dirty water and strong rip currents. Day two saw cleaner water and calming seas with light winds. Fishing was only slightly better as fish began to scatter away from the feeding zones in the trough. As always, VBAC represented well and proved that the out of town teams can compete and score points in all conditions.  A few of the teams scored large puppy drum which paved a way to separate their scores from the pack.  Bluefish and Roundhead dominated the remaining points. The banquet was invite only but free dinner was served to teams that requested to-go orders.

The Virginia Beach Anglers Club sent only one of two teams to Long Beach Island, New Jersey to compete in the World Series of Surf Fishing hosted by the LBI Fishing Club. The club competed well in some decent but chilly weather. Catches were dominated by bluefish and roundhead. The largest fish caught in the tournament was a spanish mackerel. The sand has always been soft there since the beach replenishment after Hurricane Sandy and one of our notorious beach anglers got stuck again (like he does every year). We are looking forward to sending two teams again in 2022 and there are some rumbles that the tournament may be expanded to a two day format for a special anniversary event. This would make the tournament a must fish event!

East and North East winds 15+ knots once again dominated the Nags Head Tournament. This tournament has a track record of poor weather and difficult beach conditions. There was enough beach to access the fishing sites and there were very few issues except for some very soft sand on one of the steep off-ramps. Though the weather was rough there were a lot of fish in the surf. Red drum, particularly some puppy drum, were very common in the tournament and many teams scored one. Very few drum were larger than 28 inches but quite a few slot puppy drum were scored including one on each of our club teams! There were also some good size bluefish, many over 15 inches and lots of smaller roundhead were scattered in the surf. Our anglers certainly competed well and it shows with two more great finishes! Congrats to Jerry Mariano for his 22 inch puppy drum and Caroline Robinson for her 21.5 inch puppy drum. They helped push their respective teams up the leaderboard. Patty Searby also competed in the tournament and she dominated the women’s division by scoring the most fish in the tournament. She scored 7 roundhead.

Caroline Robinson with her Puppy Drum!
